The Ninja Spotlight Thread - CANIBUS Edition
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:05:36 PM »
Welcome to The Ninja Spotlight (Canibus Edition)...

To answer some questions:

--Why not use the real videos?--
We're not totally against doing that, but as it stood, we wanted the music itself to be what there was the most intense focus on. In addition of course to being able to advertise the sites that the artist would want directly into the Avi. As well as make it understood that these were Ninja Spotlight pieces.

--Can anyone be featured on the Spotlight?--
Absolutely not. As it stands, this is a Hip-Hop centric and Spotlight features are reserved for Underground artists that epitomize what Hip-Hop is about but are getting nowhere near the kind of attention they should be.

--How often will The Spotlight release?
For now every 4-6 weeks. Depending on its success, this number might change.

Once again you have achieved something that is utterly incredible. Loved all the songs and the podcast. This is the most epic spotlight yet, and ninja can only achieve more. Hana you are a friggin force in this game. What you have done for both the television and movie content and the spotlights is incredible, and getting canibus on the pod!@! HOW FU*KING EPIC IS THAT!!

big ups to you and the rest of the people that made this happen. Big ups to myst who also does much to make these things go down. You guys are making this site sicker then it already is/ Keep up the good work

And canibus I dont even have to say anything about you because you have already proven yourself to be a lyrical genius and you do not let the mainstream pressure get to you while writing stuff. You rhyme about what you want to rhyme about and not what the companies prefer which makes you unlike many of the other rappers in the game. We need this in hip hop

I remember when I used to freestyle as a kid like 14-17 and one of my ending to a song was

 (rock)
yeah' you bitches cant stand with this
I freestyle like my first name was canibus

Not a huge hip hop fun but I've listened to the spotlight tunes :)
The lyrics are almost completely lost with me (so I can't fully judge the message) but I liked the music.

If your going to do a spotlight on underground hip-hop, you might want to pick good real underground emcees. bottom line canibus is wack. try living legends( any one of them) abstract rude, ace, def jux, man there are so many. canibus is not underground. I love your site every thing on here is dope just think you need better spotlights. again canibus is to underground hip-hop as disney is to horror films.

that's a ridiculous statement. there is no doubt that there are tons of names in the undergound, a ridiculous amount of them spotlight worthy, but to deny Canibus his due and his status is ludicrous.

OK Looking at this from semi outsider I have some thoughts.
First I want it clear I mean no disrespect to Canibus and I can understand maybe how Phara looks at him with different views from me.
Canibus may not be underground because he likes the freedom or the other reasons some artists who don't need jack from the industry become underground. Many are there cause they want no chains no rules, total freedom and they can afford to be there, They don't even want distribution or industry money, they were born with golden spoons in their mouths. Not all but enough for there even to be an underground of anything to begin with. Every "underground" Ive been introduced to anyway.

As I understand it Canibus because of his own actions got put on a list of artists that industry pros are not to work with.

In RnB, it reminds me of Sly Stone. Of course I heard of that from exwife and him well after it first happened.
It put him in a type of underground. He became untouchable, like someone with plague. All for mistakes he knew he made, but all the talking in the world would not change the facts.
OK now with Canibus, he watched his best friend fall in line , talk the right crap, and over the last ten years has had success that even some "rich college kids" dream of.
What did/does Canibus did/do that causes this, I don't have a clue, well after the podcast maybe.
But I feel he is in a place now which must feel like he got left behind. Desperation in his voice is opposite of what I expected.
Talent will never be enough. And the more you need to "make it" the more barriers will be placed in your way.

For me , to know that a man with so much talent as Canibus is still playing clubs in the city , makes me dislike the entire
"industry machine" which controls lives cold heartily. man, Id love to slap them.

Now the Spotlight. Why not have a jewel like Canibus?
Yes I did say he may not have dreamed of being "underground".  but right now, today. HE is. And he don't cry about it.
I respect him for that. He moves ahead. I love his strength, especially when shit gets thrown his way, he wipes it off
and comes out fighting. eloquently and learned. Not with fifth grade American middle school education and behaviors. which others only know and believe a paycheck suddenly makes them charming.
Canibus is a man.

I think Canibus' comments in the podcast interview spoke volumes about hip-hop/rap as an industry, as an art form, and as a communicative tool. It seems these days, even though the scope of production in commercial hip-hop has expanded to involve an increasing number of artists, technicians and suits of just about every color, that the general message of most hip-hop has become increasingly superficial, egotistical and self-absorbed. While self-glorification has been a part of rap music for as long as I can remember, it's become overwhelmingly prevalent and concentrated that you'll see artists topping the charts today with entire albums dedicated exclusively to marketing their personal brand.

It's saddening to see, even with talent pouring into the industry at an exponentially expanding rate, that rap, a literary and musical art capable of conveying deep and meaningful messages to the masses, has devolved to the point where so many tracks sound like three-minute-long ad spots.  Hip-hop artists that want to share a message with the world shouldn't feel forced to dump their lyrics in an R&B track for fear of not connecting with the 'target audience'.

And, at least when writing lyrics for rap battles and diss tracks, the artist is forced to think about someone other than him/herself. ;)

Great interview, loved the theme. Anyone that truly appreciates hip-hop should take heed.

That's exactly what the companies are supposed to do. They are not your friend. They are a vehicle to sell. A expertise in marketing
is their strongest suit or else there out of business.

I can understand why FM broadcast radio is still around and plays some real crap.
The appreciated or familiar personalities whom are withing miles of the listener has some type of appeal. Something must
be is what keeps it able to make a profit.
At the same time they are business ppl who get sent "packets" of what to push in rotation that week.

That's what I think of when its about the underground.
The playing / and listening of the music that never ends up in those "Packets" with yards of promo pop and favors.
Listening to college radio that came in on rainy days well was like discovering a new world that was like me.
Then Id go out and buy Bob Segar- Night Moves, lol. so I guess the machines brain washing is very good on the rinse cycle.

So, if you walked into a convenience store because you needed to use the restroom, instead of looking around, or asking the clerk for help, would you immediately drop trou and take a dump in the slurpee machine?

Why is net forum logic such a difficult concept for some people to grasp? Do you not realize that everyone that previously posted in this thread (including me, hence the /rant) got notified that you posted here?

Forgive me if this is "mini-modding", but come on, folks... The sign's on the door!

The whole event was inspirational in understanding how canibus was making his precision hits with his tight lyrics. The rhythm and style of his rhymes, like good music opened my mind. Just lost in amazement, left wanting n craving his lyrics like scripts, the best medicine to cure the shits other MCs are spouting but mikes aren't just for shouting.

Hip-Hop nowadays isn't what it used to be considered and i find it great that you guys are bringing in people who through whatever reason haven't been given the opportunity to be brought out. I concur most companies are just about commercializing this and restructuring that to the point that they devalue the artists themselves. Canibus outshone himself in the podcast, his views in particular i found were justifiable and his music was affluent.

To whomever blasted this guy a few posts back, seriously mate if you aint got nothing good to say and that wasn't even credible as an opinion by the way, don't post, seriously negativity like that is just gonna bring you shame which  it did.
