Ninjavideo IS a thinktank.  It's one body.  Like as far as coming together for a common vision.

26:20
He's definitely right about new cats that come out and thing they know everything.  You can't do that.  Unless you've been in the game that long, you can't claim to know things based off what you've heard or read cuz the day it happens to you, you wouldn't react the way you read or heard it, you're gonna do what your instinct tells you.

around 40:00
The idea of a Hip Hop burning man is insane.  But Canabus is way right when he says people are gonna try to cash in. It's amazing the amount of power money has over people.  It's one thing to hustle for money but greed is a whole other monster.  I love writing lyrics and performing.  But i would do it for the amount of money i'm making now with my full time job.

43:10ish
Sorry Bus, I have to disagree with 50 being on top.  I think the majority of the music he came out with after Get Rich of Die Tryin is garbage.   I understand that he is hella popular and can draw a crowd mainstream but I don't feel that he represents hip-hop.  I think a Jay-Z or Nas would pull in more actual hip-hop heads.

52:00ish
Why the Jamaican accent all of a sudden?

wow that was long but definitely an intimate look into the mind of a lyrical genius.  It will give you a whole ew perspective and the way things are and the way they should be.  Also, some great unput from Phara on the state of hip-hop as well.

Thank you.

What a great refreshing interview. The sentiments of coming together not just inside a music community but as people was great. I like the comments made on a "mentorship" for the younger generation, bridging a gap but more teaching on the roots of hip hop. It's something I think is lost on the younger generation of hip hop music fans & indeed would be a shame if forgotten.

The overall message for me made me think more in terms of just a music community but in terms of people coming together as a unit in all wakes & forms of life. I've always tried to be a strong believer in coming together collectively, listening to others, learning from others but it's also something I didn't really dig deep for until I got a little bit older & experienced a little more in life.

It was interesting though as I could relate to being that younger person who thought he knew everything. Where my parents music was forgettable, the world owed me something, & doing things collectively was against the grain. Now I want to teach young kids growing up about the soul music that I once thought was dated, I'll get back from the world what I put in & doing things collectively is what I love best.

I didn't expect such a long interview & I thought it would touch on "saving hip hop" etc.
Kudos to Cannibus for bringing such a strong message to the forefront, this was indeed a great positive spotlight

Thanks

A few things that came to my mind:

Fairly early: The point about rap being doomed to fail because of the individual greed and blind strive of every each one to be at the top no matter what it takes: This is a problem of how the commercial forces in the business of music misinterpreted this core idea of Rap music, meaning the often misunderstood idea of battle. I understand battle to be there for the sake of competing not for the sake of determining who is the best. Lets focus on the production of musical art utterances rather than the celebration of already gained success.
This is what came to the front. The over the top celebration of artists and their own success.
To reduce that to healthy measures I believe the answer can be found in Hip Hop culture itself. Looking at the Element of Graffiti. Here we are talking also about leaving something of quality behind. Making yourself being respected for what you achieve and thus pushing the whole community to activate talent and produce quality. Also the idea of colouring your surroundings instead of getting frustrated by seeing grey all day and being doomed to passiveness.
But unfortunately those who badly influence the development of Rap just lost connection to those notions. How far has Rap distance it self from Hip Hop culture. Bring that back by washing those brains that are the ones making superficial music successful. Namely the listeners themselves. In order to for that, there need to be places where people discuss their art form. There are no Jams anymore here. So thanks Phara that there is The Forumz of Ninja to do exactly that.
Quote
A place to hold hands

At 18:30  The question raised here is: Why do people accept what they hear? Why is the answer to that by the conscious fans of this art form to yell out for an Alpha Dog to articulate all those things that go wrong, letting the broad community lean back on couches saying "Yep I agree, thats how its all shit thats happening" If Rap has the power to change things, why dont all of those calling themselves Rap work together in order to achieve. I believer there is a responsibility of Artist towards their artform and it development but those that have the power to shape are those that consume. So fight the cause! All of us!
Its an analogy to the discussion of how civil societies can be motivated to participate in postdemocratic nations and their governance.

74:00 Yes, I think cocaine is bad for Rap as it is for everything it comes in touch with. I believe since the white powder can be considered doping and when consumed over a long time leads to numbness its everything Rap does not need. No decent competition and general lack of appeal since the drug is the appeal itself.

25:50 Finally I think it is a form of irony that a word used by so many artists shows the binary dichotomy this art form seems to show.

Chain:
Meaning A: a giant, expensive often tasteless piece of jewelery worn to show

Meaning B: a selection of bonds holding (hands) forming a greater piece.

I would love to have an encore with those questions posted, that have not been addressed.

This interview was great, it opened my eyes on a scene I knew nothing about.
I learned a lot about the movement in general.

He has such a wonderfull view on how the world should be, never thought that about Rap/HipHop musicians.

A big thanks to Canibus and Ninja for making this possible.

Another great podcast.

A few thoughts:

Everybody keeps talking about changing hip-hop (including you) .. you talk about "holding hands" but you (in my eyes/ears) took numerous shots at the new generation of rappers.

The comment about ignorance was made,  I grew up on the west coast listening to "gangsta rap" through the 90's ...Artists & hip-hop in general is no where near as "ignorant" as it was then

I'm  in my 30s, (listening to Canibus when I was 16..most that will post in here were probably still watching Sesame Street)  I've seen the change & ya it's not what it used to be but it's not that much different either.  Rappers still talking about the "struggle, guns, money, dope, bling, cars & other rappers.  You'll always have dudes that come through as 1 hit wonders & make bullshit or hit a certain movement hard like all the dance crap. It has always been that way in any genre of music.

Change is hard to accept, younger generations dictate what happens. Look at the shock & change our generation of hip-hop forced on our parents & people that were 30 back in 92

Back then our generation received the same negative comments & statements that we throw out now to the new breed of hip-hop.   Time to step back & let the noobs do their thing.  (Now we know how our grandparent & Parents felt)

Only two ways you can go about it nowadays:

1. Make the music the younger fans want to hear for the stores & blaze mixtapes with the real street shit.

A. This is what all the top selling artist have done over the last 5 years.

2. Do it by yourself/indie

Props Canibus for doing your thing for so long & taking the time to do the poddie.

wow wow wow

This was incredible. It amazes me what you guys have pulled off hana with this one. After Crooked, I thought can they outdue themselves? Even tho' I KNEW you could I was still pleasantly surprised with this come up. Canabis has always been one of my favorite freestyle rappers. He is pretty much one of the best known rappers when it comes to spitting off the dome

I would like to first thank Canabis for being on board with this podcast. I am grateful for you being here and all the members of ninja, Im sure feel the same. Your rap skill is beyond sick and you are what today's rappers need to take examples from. You haven't sold out to mainstream record studio's and that is commendable .

The only thing I would disagree with, like Cree said was the 50 cent being on top thing, but a lot of people would come to the same conclusion

I feel lucky to call myself ninjastaff when spotlights like this get released, because you are an epic rapper hands down. I can say that along with Crooked this is without a doubt my favorite podcast

And to hana and the crew\

One word...EPIC

You guys deserve a pat on the back, no you deserve to walk into an auditorium and have EVERYONE pat you on the back and hoist you on there shoulders, while parading you around as heroes. THAT IS HOW EPIC THIS IS. i NEED to stop now because I am rambling with excitement but just know

THIS PODCAST WAS EPIC!@!

umm....did she even ask ONE of the questions posted by fans?

why would you say "submit questions to ask Canibus" when you're gonna completely ignore the questions and jus wanna do you. i thought yall would actually use the questions like you said, so i was really hyped about this interview, but im 50 minutes in and i havent heard a single question.

im a big Canibus fan, but why the hell would you say you were gonna ask our questions when you knew damn well you werent gonna ask any. i posted a LOTTA questions thats way better than any of the questions you asked. not even a question about his upcoming work, are you serious??? he's a RAPPER why wouldnt you ask the most obvious shit?

we've COVERED the state of hip hop in a MILLION canibus interviews. i thought yall were gonna actually make a descent interview, but no, you did a terrible job. for someone who doesnt know shit about hip hop or Canibus, this interview may be enlightening, but if your a canibus or hip hop fan, it will just sound like repetitive crap.

next time, jus fuckin say wut ur gonna do. dont ask us to post questions when you aint gonna use em, im really disappointed wit this shit. god damn.

someone ban this fuck ^^

look dipshit. i went into this with a list and both of us knew that there was a whole slew of questions pending from folks that wanted this specific thing answered or that. however, i dont know about you, but when I, and someone that I greatly admire get into a running dialogue about things that we are both interested in and are speaking passionately about, then i dont interrupt him to ask some question from a 3 fuckin post wonder like yourself. if you got to the end than you would know that another interview is tentatively scheduled to actually address those questions and THE ONLY REASON that can even happen is because the conversation as it stood went well enough for someone as incredibly busy as Canibus to be willing to do this again.

So guess what? When someone asks me how i felt about the response to this interview, your comments wont be the ones to register some time down the line. Rather, the grace bestowed upon me by FUCKIN CANIBUS for conversing like like minded individuals will resonate. you... you're a dick. get the fuck off my site.

:)

dante,
the time you can actually organize an interview with such a talented artist as canibus, then you can ask whatever questions you want. until then, shut the fuck up and enjoy the rare opportunity to listen to an interview from someone who doesnt go out and conduct many interviews at all.

im downloading the poddie now. ill have to block off some time to listen to the whole thing. :)

I love you Phara!

Canibus is the best rapper alive, congratulation on getting an interview.  I really enjoyed listening to this.

I completely agree with what you both were saying in the interview, I sent a message to Canibus's myspace, but who knows if it will get read, but I said to him.

"Thanks for saying what us consumers have been thinking since biggie and pac died."

After finishing the entire Canibus interview, i feel the need to apologize to you and everyone on this forum for a few of the things I said earlier. I was completely out of line and I'm sorry.

In retrospect this was a very interesting interview and you did a great job. thank you for supporting the movement of REAL hip hop and I wish you and this website the best of luck in the future :)

I downloaded late last night and listened at work. This is how it went down today:

Old man: Excuse me son can you answer a questio.....
Me: Mother Fucker stop crowding me, can't you see I'm busy listening to the poddie!?
Old man: sorr...
Me: Damn right your sorry now go get me a Coke bitch!

I'm just kidding....I didn't make him buy me a coke. Great points were raised and I love the fact that you spoke about what you both were passionate about instead of the standard Q and A. The conversation flowed well and by allowing him to expand on his thoughts you got a better sense of where he was coming from. I have to admit I am still thinking about your idea about a burning man of sorts. I think it's doable if approached the right way.

Re: NinjaVideo Podcast #58 - An Interview with Canibus!!!!!!!

What I got from the podcast:

Canibus spoke from the heart with focus telling his message sincerely. Phara and he sharing an ideology of hip hop becoming over commercialized, which may bring it “to hell”.
Like when you meet someone for the first time and hit it off right away because of a similar thinking on some subjects.

Canibus graciously complemented Phara on her putting him at ease during the podcast recording. This earned my respect for him as a man.
He also respected Phara's above average knowledge of the hip-hop scene and most importantly is having like him, higher goals. Seeing the larger picture.

At times it was like listening in on two strangers on a train talking about things they both feel strongly about. Afterwards I feel like I understand where Canabus's mind set is.
The part about him not wanting to even talk about a persons new record or how their going to do this or that unless they are first willing to take a pledge in a sense to hold hands
shows just how serious he is about this concept of his.

I think a vision of the formation of a society or order of some type consisting of members of the hip-hop scene would be a good thing.
In the beginning I am not sure of a movement but rap did have a message. And with success it has been drowned out with over production and rewritten as glamour.

As far as younger generations being willing to listen and understand the vision of Canibus where Emcees with separate views can step back and see they are together in a business larger than their singular wants and goals. That is a hard sell to teens, I think he may agree.

As he spoke honestly on his own writings about penning some lines in the heat of the moment himself in the past, Canibus sees now the distraction it can cause a young artist coming out. They use it as a means of a bandwagon to jump on to and as Canibus said, “it’s not a real war”. Also name-calling and writing dozens of bars to rip on someone is dumb when they are both in the business together. I agree artists need to recognize this and form a real bond, in order to guarantee any legacy not just longevity.

Canibus knows that many use any negative story they can to bring rap music down and this camp verses camp type of attitude is self destructive and worst a means to an ends in the extended outlook of the art forrm.
Listening to Canibus talk about Michael Jackson’s passing and what if it occurred ten years ago is just one lesson for this new generation of Emcees. They would as I, remember when the entire world had only a sincere respect Michael as a man.
They may then be able to see how media leaders changed wide public opinions by pushing certain storys and buring others. Abusing their power to defame a major figure and mislead a republic.
Good to hear Canibus also does remember.

2 hours long and time went by so quickly because of the high level of thoughts being exchanged.

Phara you are a true trooper to get thru this with your cold. Your voice is very good for a person obviously with a cold.
Hope you felt better soon after the recording was done.
Your voice is platinum, take care of it.

Thanks to everyone "who put this thing together"
It was great to listen to Canabus and his "Holding Hands" theory .

My favorite line:   "...hold hands with me and see what its like..." Canibus

the off the top of the dome style of your interviews prove to be what the spotlight needs. When you are carrying a casual convo' with someone like Canabis or Crooked I you can learn a lot more about the person if u are just shooting the shit talking about things instead of going one by one through a planned, cheesy questionnaire that all artists see everyday.  It is played out for sure. And sorry guys but what phara comes up with is far better then just asking all the questions from the thread one by one hands down. The girl's got skill and she shows it in the way she approaches and carries out her interviews. She mine as well be a hollywood interviewer with all the shit she gets out of these artists. After listening to the Canabis one you kinda feel like you know the guy, as is the same for all the poddies.

I think the way Hana does these interviews is flawless. We learn a lot about the artist the way she does them, and in my opinion they should not change.

But thanks again to Canabis for this groundbreaking interview with our queen. After hearing it I conclude that there is nothing ninja cannot do. The sky is the limit.

We can be a Tv show and movie content powerhouse and at the same time be a haven for sick underground talent, such as Canabis or crooked.

The possibilities are endless
