It's still just poetry set to a beat....Value it for what it is but it is not music. I will leave it at that lest I be skinned alive by the philistine mob.

How is it not music?!

How can you say its not music?!

You just discredited a whole culture, my friend...
nice one...
(slow clap)
A culture/art that's responsible for damn near all of the money brought in by the music industry and is responsible for setting the standards for just about anything & everything you purchase (Clothes,Shoes,Cars,Alcohol..I could go on forever on this one.)

edited to for the dude who was just disrespectful to Ranch .aka.. My favorite person on Ninja.

How can you say even say its not music?!
Who are you to decide what is and isn't music?  You are a very closed minded person if you really believe yourself...look deep, music is music, dude.  Because you don't think of it as music, doesn't change the fact that it take loads of talent to make good hip-hop.  You must look past the Nellies and the Siscos that you hear on the radio and find the REAL hip-hop...
Give you a hint...its not on the radio...

Saying hip-hop is not music is like saying water isn't refreshing.
You just discredited a whole culture, my friend...

Ok, I won't leave it at that then.

I am not saying it doesn't have value. I said value it for what it is. There is rap with a good aim out there but white people own the companies now and they only want to hear the stuff that is bad for people. White people own rap now. I saw this on a show that I don't remember.

I am saying it is not music because it has no melody and no harmony. Music evokes an emotional response through the interactions of the sound waves and how they overlap. The beat and frills in rap are there to accentuate what the person is saying. Nothing is being communicated by the the tones themselves, they are pure decoration. It is not part of that art form. So it is my opinion but I do know a thing or two about music. It is not an ignorant opinion.

Rap is part of so many bad aspects of our culture. I was once on the train with a black jazz musician and we were discussing Jazz and Bach(specifically how to incorporate certain Bach lics into a drum solo). We got on the subject of rap. He said to me. "you know what the difference is between white kids and black kids when it comes to the shit?" "White kids may listen and pose the part but when it comes down to it they leave it at home when it really matters" "Black people will go out and shoot each other over this shit" That is the jist of what he said.

So yeh, I am discrediting a culture of stupidity and violence. I am not however discrediting the rappers who are trying to change their communities for the better. I don't normally take offense but I take offense at that. I can discredit rap as a musical form without discrediting the culture that made it.  Read what I said and understand it before you accuse me of being a racist. Essentially what you were saying, weedman, is that I am discrediting rap because it comes from black people and not because  of its musical value, otherwise you would have said you are discrediting an entire art form. Don't try and tell me you meant rap culture by culture. You meant black culture and you know it.

It's so easy to accuse people of racism and so hard to defend oneself. That aspect of our culture needs to change.

uh whut? take it to culture and debate. and as someone that grew up within hip hop culture, what it is today is nothing compared to the movement it once was. or rather what it is portrayed as in the mainstream media is bullshit compared to what the underground still embraces. As to the lyricality of it and whether it is evocative via its harmony, you've obviously listened to fuck all.

/end

Thank Anubis or move the fuck on. This is a huge release.

This is a great fucking drop in my opinion! Nas is the best alive in the game, and a true revolutionist. He definitely put FOX in check, and opened a lot of peoples eyes to the biased media, and the blatent censorship that is going on today. We can have senseless murders portrayed on television, and the big screen, but when someone speaks on their experiences as a part of the youth in today's world, and calls it how they see it, it is met with ridicule, slander and blame for all that's wrong with society today. It's bullshit, flat out, and thank God for people like Nas, who aren't afraid to voice their opinions and make use of our first amendment right.

Much Respect, Anubis.

Good for you man good for you. You are what is right with this stuff and yes thank for putting it out there if this is the good stuff! I didn't mean to turn this into a debate. Sorry. Being essentially called a racist out of no where, just gets me pissed the fuck off.

Habeo Gravitas et Auctoritas

I am the sum of a multiplied multitude of highly improbably wave functions.
Justice is a bleed through force form another universe. Ignore it. Spoiler for the spoiler
In fact there are two bleed through forces. The first is gravity which is feminine in nature;justice is the masculine form.
Consider it a new form of super symmetry.

Wow, Thank you a whole bunch, Anubis. Proud of Nas and what he has accomplished as a revolutionary, imo.
I really needed a break from all the watered down radio madness.  It is refreshing to soak up intellectual hip-hop.

Oh and top 3, btw!
