How to: Convert Video Files to View on Your Ipod

This is essentially considered an `Ipod Convertor`, but more basically it will convert almost any video file, including the dreaded FLV, to an Mpeg4 format, which can be much more widely used, and is the accepted format for viewing on your Ipod.  This can be very very handy if like me you commute to and from work for hours on end, and get very bored listening to people go on about the price of bread or what they had to eat last night., or like the other day when I got delayed traveling to London because someone threw themselves on the track, so I got sent through bloody Dartford and god knows where! Luckily this gave me time to watch Day of the Dead………unfortunately the film was crap, but 1hour and 20 odd minutes went by much quicker.

#1 – First you will need to download a little program called Videora from here .  Once you have this little blighter downloaded plus up and running you will be asked to select what Ipod model you own, do this and you will be taken to the main screen, as shown below: -

#2 – The best route to take for e beginner who doesn’t want any trouble is to click the `Convert` button located in the top left hand corner of the screen, followed by selecting of the `Video File` tab.  You will now be asked to select which mode you would like to use, it would be best to go for the `Normal` mode, as its very easy to use, and does exactly what you want, but I believe you have to be connected to the net to use it.

#3 – Once this is selected you will be taken to the next screen that will from now on show clear instructions on what to do, eliminating the need for me to post further pictures.  You will be asked to select the video file which you wish to convert, then the output folder, it would be best to create one specifically for your Ipod video files (The end product will only be one file).  Now you will be asked if what you would like to name your new file, automatically it will have the same name as the original file, but it would be best to change this to avoid confusion, once done click `Next`.

#4– Now you have the option to enhance the quality of your output file, this would be advised, as it does not effect the size of the file to much, or the time it will take to convert.  However there is little point changing the `Video Size` from Ipod to TV, unless of course you want to hook your Ipod up to view through your TV.  Other than that option increase everything else to the max, then whack the `Next` button.

#5 – The final step involves you pressing the `Start Converting` button located at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.  And after like 25+ minutes that is pretty much it, job done.  Of course you can see the progress of your conversion if you so wish by selecting the appropriate big blue typed hyperlink.  All you have to do now is put your converted file in your Ipods library and sync it.

If you are going to use Videora, I advise using POWER MODE. Normal mode is really easy to use, and if its not giving any problems then definitely continue using it. But by using the power mode option, you may be able to fix syncing problems, increase the overall quality of the video, or just convert a lot faster.

Milkchew only gave a basic tutorial for the normal mode, which is so easy to use it doesn't really need a tutorial. Power mode is a little more confusing though. It took me a while, and a lot of testing out, to discover what everything meant... so here's some info that may help.

How to convert using Videora's power mode feature.

1. If you haven't downloaded the videora program yet, do so now.

2. Open videora. Then, at the top of the page, click convert. Select "POWER MODE".

3. This will bring you to the converting screen. Before you start anything, i'll tell you now to just ignore the "One-Click Convert" and "Add to Queue" buttons. They are pretty much useless.

4. Add the movie file, by clicking "Select File". Browse for the correct folder, and select the one you wish to convert. If the file your looking for isn't in its folder, make sure that 'Files of Types' reads ALL files (not media files).

5. Next, select the Output directory by clicking "browse". This is where your converted video will end up. Although, videora automatically sends it to your itunes by default (if you have itunes), so it doesn't really matter.

6. Under "Title", just write the title of the video. If later, you are having problems converting, try leaving no spaces between words (ie. 'Trailer.Park.BoysE103') ..for some reason this helps.

7. Under "Device", chose what type of ipod you have. For help finding out what generation your ipod is, just look it up on Wikipedia or the mac website.

8. Now the complicated step. Setting the "Profile". The profile is just everything from video size to audio/video quality. Select the tiny arrow, and look at all the options... just to see if you have any idea what it means. If you don't (like it didn't at first), just continue reading :P.

9. Now all you have to do is click, "Start Converting", and you are done. The next page gives you the option to either view your conversion speed, or to start converting another file (you can only convert 1 at a time though).

Okay, here's what every word basically means.. (this is for step 8)

H.264 is a kind of video format that can be played on ipods. Compared to MPEG4 (another format), it has a sharper video quality... and movies with a lot of motion turn out better. The downside to H.264, is that it takes longer to convert.
MPEG4 is the other format. Converting times are much faster, but the overall quality of the video is less. I advise using MPEG4 if you are having audio syncing problems.
QVGA and VGA This is the size of the video. Very simply put, QVGA = Ipod screen ...and VGA = TV screen. Using VGA would be for people who connect their ipods to tvs, and watch movies. Converting using VGA takes A LONG TIME. Also, if you play VGA on your ipod, your ipod will automatically resize the video--which might make the quality strange looking.
384, 512, 768, 1024, and 1408kbps As simply as I can put it, this means VIDEO QUALITY. The higher number of kbps, the higher quality. But, also the more kbps, the longer it will take to convert.
Sterio/128 kbps This will never change. It's obviously audio quality. 128kbps doesn't sound too bad imo.
2 pass This feature is pointless imo. It pretty much just converts your movie twice, and adds them together for quality reasons. Best used if the movie you are converted has much fast motion (ie. action movies). I advise not using this as it takes forever, and the quality isn't much better then plain H.264.
Advance, AviSynth, or Videowizard I have never used these settings before because I have been told they aren't good. I don't think they are very useful, buy if anyone can tell me better, please do. I advise just not using them.

------------------------------------------
As for what I use, it really depends on what I want. If I'm in a huge hurry and want my video to convert fast and with moderate quality, I use...
MPEG4 QVGA 1024kbps Stereo/128kbps

But most of the time, I just want good video quality. This takes a little longer, but looks much better.
H.264 QVGA 768kbps Stereo/128kbps  ---I recommend this, if it works without any audio sync problems

Thanks for the tutorial!!!  Just a few tips to others for how I go about the process:

Supernoob videora converting:

1. Download Videora: (oops accidently posted the link to the site before I read the rules section on posting links...just google it)
2. Create a shortcut on desktop to My Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files
3. Select show/movie you want to watch and let the video load all the way
4. Go to the shortcut you created and change the file name from *.divx.part to *.avi
5. Open videora and select said avi in normal mode and convert...when I convert I select all the minimal options i.e. video mode old, quality basic, audio quality medium, enhance quality off.
6. Convert

I do it in this manner because an hour show should convert in about 15 minutes instead of 2 hours.  I can barely tell the difference when watching on my ipod touch between the best and worst conversion options, but to each his own.  Some of you videophiles out there might think the quality is lacking, but then again if you a videophile your probably not watching movies on a 3 inch screen.  When its done converting it should automatically add the file to movies on itunes then you just need to sync.

***Warning***

Make sure that you have an up to date internet explorer when using this program.  Mine was out of date since I use firefox but because the program uses internet explorer framework to run It is susceptible to the same exploits.  Mine was not updated and there was a number of rogue advertisements my anti-virus detected trying to exploit my system.  Despite the rogue ads it is an awesome way to get tons of ninja videos on your ipod touch/iphone.
