How to: Convert Video Files to a DVD format

How to: Convert Video Files to a DVD format

This little guide will enable you to convert almost any video file (AVI, Mpeg4, Divx, FLV) to a DVD format (ISO files and all that stuff), so you can then select that the folder that contains your new DVD format version of your video file and burn it to a blank DVD.  This will then be able to be played on pretty much any bog standard DVD player.

#1 - First of all you will need a program called DVD Flick, which can be downloaded from here .  Once you have the program downloaded and up and running you will be presented with a screen like this: -

#2 - Obviously you must have the video files in the first place, that goes without saying, so disregard the first sentence of this paragraph if you already do have them.  Right, now you will need to set up a `Project Destination Folder`, basically this is the folder you would like you converted DVD file to be sent to.  My advice on this would be to set up a folder somewhere on your computer, probably in `My Videos`, called DVDs or something similar, then inside that folder set up another folder, and name this one the title of the video you are converting i.e. Gabriel.  Now you highlight this folder by clicking on the `Browse` button at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.  Once this has been done the route of your destination folder will be shown, as represented in the picture above.

#3 – Now you must add the video file which you wish to convert.  Clicking the `Add File` button in the upper right hand section of the screen can simply do this, you will need to trawl through your computers folders to find the file you wish to convert.  Once you have found and selected the file you wish to convert you will be shown the screen below, after the video file in question has loaded (Should take seconds): -

#4 – The next step is to convert the file, which is the most simple of them all.  All you gotta do is click on `Create DVD` button, which can be found slap bang in the middle / top of the screen.  You will be asked if you are sure you want to proceed, if you are then do so.  Now you will be warned that the destination file already exists, and all of its contents will be deleted if you do this.  Well as it was created like 5 minutes ago you will already know this, and there should be nothing in there anyway, that’s why the separate folders are created.  All you gotta do is click yes, then about 1 1/2 to 2 hours later, depending on movie size, you will have a whole bunch of odd files located in the destination folder.

When you decide to burn your project to DVD using Nero or whatever program you wish, all you gotta do is select the folder itself, in this instance the folder Gabriel, and burn that.  Should be about 4gb-ish of data in your new folder, about the size of a DVD.

Notes:
1. You can also set up DVD Flick to burn direct to a blank DVD, but obviously you will need to insert the blank disk before you start, and select this option by clicking on `Project Settings` then the `Burning` tab.  This will remove the need to create a destination folder.

2. A full guide can be obtained from here .  This will include all the extras that you can do i.e adding extra audio tracks, subtitles etc.

3. You can also use DVD Flick to add numerous ammounts of video files, and convert the into one singular DVD video file.  DVD Flick will mould together all the video parts so that you would be hard pressed to see the joints, as it will run as one continuous video. This can be very handy when converting a multi part movie.  However you do need to be carefull you do not go over the 2hour run time limit that a blank DVD has.

Yep.  Itl play on any ordinary DVD player, once burnt to a blank DVD.  I prefer to use DVDR+, tried the `-` ones but they seem a bit shit.

Ive been doing this for ages.  Dont like to watch films on the computer monitor so I convert and burn them to disc so I can watch em on a BIG tele.

I probably shouldave put all that in the guide

NP.

Itl expand a normal 700mb AVI or 600 Divx file to about 4gb, so all you gotta do is worry about the run time i.e. If you got a film wth a long run time over 2hours, like American Gangster, that you are converting from two seperate AVI files it woudl be best to put it on two discs or you will notice that the audiomwill be out of sync.

However if you are converting episodes of a TV show, like I do with Nip/Tuck, its best to add two episodes at a time and convert them to one singular DVD format.  As each episode tends to be about 45mins long, so doubling that up would sit just abotu right on a blank DVD with 120mins run time, and you shouldnt experience any lack of audio quality.

I've got a question for you.   BTW - this program rocks - but after burning to a disk, I insert it in my DVD player and it tells me there is a disc error and can't playback.  Is there something I need to do to the DVD before burning to it?  Am I completely missing the point and need to be relegated to the short bus?  Please help.  Thanks -L

Be aware that some video files (.avi and .divx) that are converted to DVD format do NOT play in a PS2 or XBox. They do however work in most DVD players.  <------- personal experience

Nice guide btw, and with pictures too for those of us that can't read :)

« Reply #11 on: March 17, 2008, 07:05:20 PM »
Morning all,

I was wondering if anybody could help me with this quite annoying problem im having with burning DVD's. Ive recentley downloaded 2 lost episodes (off this site) to my computer. When i play them on my computer the videos are fine and i can watch them start to finish, but the problem im having is, in between converting the files (using DVDFlick) and burning them to a DVD (using Windows DVD Maker) when i play the disc on a dvd player after each chapter it will skip back to this first chapter. How is this happening and how can I rectify it? as i say the videos im dowloading are fine it just seems to be happening during the converting/burning process. When i play the dvd back it shows each individual chapter but each chapter is exactley the same? In the DVD Scenes menu on the dvd its showws each scene but when i click a scene it will only play the first scene?

any help from a moderator or anything would be greatley appreciated.

thanks very much for this great site as well.

Ninja Hamster,

As I said, I haven't used DVD Flick before (I normally use another program), but JUST FOR YOU I've downloaded, installed and am currently running DVD Flick in order to burn a test DVD so that I can hopefully give you help on what you need to do.  I already have a pretty good idea of what to tell you, but I want to successfully complete a DVD burn before I post my instructions/information.

So please be patient.  I should definitely have the info by this Sunday, possibly even by sometime on Saturday.

So until then,

Ok get ready for a long post!  What you need to do is change your settings on the DVD Flick program.  Specifically where the final files are stored.  While I could tell you how to move the files you've created, I suggest you start over, since it will be much simpler to explain and understand.  Here goes...

1) Start DVD Flick and set up your project like you did before (choose the video(s) you want to burn). Remember, you are making a REGULAR DVD, so you can't store more than 2 hours of video per disc.  I'd suggest at least for this first try, you just put a single episode on the disc.

2) Click on the Project Settings button at the top of the screen.

3) From the Project Settings menu/window, click on "Burning" (the bottom choice).

4) In the Burning window, click the checkbox labeled "Burn project to disc"

5) (OPTIONAL) In the "Disc label" window, type in the name you want to give this disc.

6) If you only have one DVD burner connected to your computer, you shouldn't have to choose the drive (just make sure the drive displayed in the "Drive" window is your burner).  Otherwise, use the down arrow to the right of the "Drive" window to choose the correct drive.

7) To recap (and cover a few options not mentioned above) the following should be the settings for this window (some of these settings are NOT critical, but use the settings below if possible, at least for this first burn, then we'll both have done the same thing):
Quote
Create ISO Image: UNCHECKED
Burn project to disc: CHECKED
Disc label:   Prison Break 2x19 (or whatever you want, this is optional)
Drive: YOUR DVD BURNER
Automatically erase disk if it is rewritable: UNCHECKED  (this only matters if you ARE using rewritable disks)
Delete ISO image after burning: UNCHECKED (you can change this later on, but if you always use the same "Project destination folder" (see step #9) on your hard drive, any files in that folder will be erased when you burn your next disc).
8) Click on the "Accept" button, you'll then go back the main screen.
(NOTE:  Once you've burned a disc successfully, you may want to go back to these screens, set the options the way you want (except for the disc label), and then click on "Use as defaults".  That way the settings will stay the same each time you run the program.)

9) Now look at the "Project destination folder" at the very bottom of the window, it should be something similar to C:\Documents and Settings\VW\My Documents\DVD  Once you've successfully burned your DVD, you can erase the contents of the DVD folder to free up space.  If you run DVD Flick again, that folder should be rewritten automatically, so unless space is critical, you don't have to erase it each time.

10) Now click on the Create DVD button at the top of the screen.
You'll get a pop-up window reminding you to be sure there is a blank disc in your burner drive.  Make sure of this and click OK.  You'll then get a "Are you sure you want to proceed?"  Click YES.

The program will then start creating the files to be burned.  Go and eat dinner, read a book, write your memoirs, etc.  :)  When the actual burning of the disc starts, a second program called "ImgBurn" will automatically be launched and it will write the proper files to your blank DVD.

Once this disc has been burned, your drive should eject the disc.  Push the drive back in and let the ImgBurn program verify the data written on the disc.  (NOTE: Verifying a disc is normally very useful, but it does take a little extra time.  If you're simply burning a disc to play on your Xbox, but are going the leave the original avi files on your computer, you can turn the verify option off (your decision).  Personally, I almost always verify my discs, I'd rather know NOW that there's a problem rather than later on when I try to use that disc.)

When the files are successfully verified, the ImgBurn program will end, you be at the subscreen for DVD Flick and you'll be told the DVD burned successfully.  Click on the Close button which will take you back at the main screen for DVD Flick.  Quit the program, eject your disc (or the other way around, the order does not matter), and try the DVD on your Xbox.

If all goes well, everything will play fine on your Xbox.  HOWEVER, there is still the possibility of it not working because of the whole codec issue discussed in previous posts.  There's even an earlier message in this thread that talks about this problem (see th message from mr62 on 2008-03-07 (post #11).  If that happens you really will need to find help from an Xbox forum, because at that point they are going to be the likely ones to have the knowledge to help you.  Hopefully that won't be necessary (keep your fingers crossed!).

Whatever happens, post here on your success or failure, so I (and others) know how well it went.  Good luck!

Mega late reply, been real busy.

Basically just follow the guide, and when you wann burn your coverted movie to DVD select the folder that all the files are in and burn that, it will burn the entire contents, the ISO, IFO, VOB etc the lot.

I was unable to do it, first it said something aobut there ont being enough space on the disc. there was loads of image space what ever that it but I continued anyway and I ogt an error and in the reason it just said access is denied ffs
When you burn a DVD for a stand-alone player (like your xbox360), the DVD has to be brand new (unused & therefore empty).  There can't be ANYTHING else on that disc.  Did you use a brand new/unused disc?

And now a complaint:
Quote
Ninja Hamster,

I have been really patient with you, and have tried to help you out a lot.  I like doing it, it helps me to improve my teaching skills.  The only thing I've asked of you was to keep me posted on your progress (I wanted to know if my advice worked or not), and to post your questions publicly so that others can benefit from learning about the problems and the possible solutions.

But if you're going to respond to such a request by posting "I had some bull shit come up saying access is denied ffs" (which helps no one), then I can let you learn without my help.

Forums are for the enjoyment and education of a GROUP of people.  Asking you to help others learn things by public posting is not an annoyance, it's how things are done here (and on most free boards).  Hopefully someday you can help someone else out by telling them something you know.  This is called SHARING!  It's how forums work.
/end of complaint

I wasn't able to keep you up to date because your inbox was full for ages and then I wearn't able to log in. As for sending you a pm if anyone else is having the same problem as me not that they are how would seeing that message help them? I am also very aware of how forums work because I have been going on a proper one for some time now.

phara I had to e mail you because the password request thing doesn't work so what else was I suppose to do?

oh dear I sent some a pm and then sent someone else 2 e mails. on any other forum this would be seen as normal behaviour. am I the only person not able to see what I have done wrong?

and once again thanks bushido for all the help you have given me
